When people look at a backpack, the first reaction is often:
“Isn’t lighter always better?”
But to be honest, when we designed the Aurora A1 Backpack, we never intended to make it a purely lightweight backpack.

The reason is simple —
lightweight often means compromise.
Let’s talk about a very real scenario.
If you commute or travel for work every day, your backpack usually carries:
-
a laptop
-
chargers
-
documents
-
and sometimes even clothes
After using many so-called “light” backpacks for a while, you’ll notice the same problems appearing again and again:
-
the bag collapses
-
it becomes uncomfortable to carry
-
your shoulders start to ache
This isn’t because you’re carrying it wrong.
It’s because the bag itself lacks structural strength.
This is exactly why the Aurora A1 Backpack insists on using 840D CORDURA® ballistic nylon.
In the early development stage, we actually tested 1260D fabric. It was indeed extremely durable — but also very heavy.
After balancing weight, structure, and strength, we ultimately settled on 840D CORDURA® as the best overall solution.
To be honest, CORDURA® fabric is not the “perfect” answer in terms of marketing:
-
people who don’t understand it think it’s just more expensive
-
it’s not ideal for spec-based marketing
But it offers several advantages that lightweight fabrics rarely achieve at the same time:
-
water resistance, abrasion resistance, and tear resistance
-
maintains structure over long-term use
-
relatively reasonable cost for its performance
-
excellent support for carry systems and load-bearing structures
In fact, there aren’t many backpacks on the market that truly use CORDURA®.
One reason is cost.
Another is that many products use what we call “concept CORDURA®” rather than real, high-spec fabric.
Beyond the fabric, we did something that isn’t very “trendy” for city backpacks:
we built a proper carry system into it.
That includes:
-
a sternum strap
-
a structured back panel
-
even a removable waist belt
Many people ask:
“Does a commuter backpack really need all this?”
My answer is simple:
Most men prefer one backpack that handles all travel scenarios.
You may not need these features every day —
but when you do need them, they must be there.
For example:
-
carrying the bag all day during a business trip
-
walking a lot on short weekend trips
That’s when you truly feel the difference between:
-
weight distributed across shoulders, back, and waist
-
versus weight hanging entirely on your shoulders
The experience is completely different.
Now you understand why the Aurora A1 Backpack didn’t follow the idea of
“the lighter, the better.”
What we care more about is:
-
whether it collapses after three to five years
-
whether it’s comfortable when fully loaded
-
whether long-term use makes you regret choosing lightness over durability
If you only carry a few items occasionally, a lightweight backpack is perfectly fine.
But if, like me, you want one backpack to stay with you for many years,
then some extra weight is actually worth it.
Of course, within a reasonable range, the Aurora A1 Backpack keeps its weight under control:
24L capacity at around 0.9kg, which is relatively lightweight for daily commuting and short business trips.
